Range of a ring network
The total length (D2) of the ring in km can not exceed the value given by the formula below:

 

 

D2 = 200 X (10-N) / R if the duration of silence between 2 frames sent by the master (waiting for a reply) is greater than 1 character length..
D2 = 200 X (40-N) / R if the duration of silence between 2 frames sent by the master (waiting for a reply) is greater than 4 character lengths.

 
N= Number of optical repeaters
R (Kb/s) = data rate of the asynchronous link (between 1,2 and1500)
 
The latent time between frames must be greater than 2 character lengths.  
The length (D1) of each segment of the ring must not exceed the range authorised by the type of fibre optic and the repeater installed (see table 1 or 2 above). Moreover the length of each segment must not exceed the values indicated by the table below.
